A Rare and captivating Oban size Original Diptych Woodblock Print from the EDO era from Kunisada I also known as Toyokuni III. An Oban Woodblock print (nishiki-e) ink and color on paper. Printed during the late EDO to early Meiji era, the Diptych depicts a Kabuki performance. In excellent condition for a woodblock print that is 160 years old. Titled “Okujyochu Kiyokawa” the print is in overall excellent condition with some signs of age.
The play depicts a housemaid traditionally referred to as “The Master’s Private Housemaid”. She may have been part of the inner sanctum within a royal household.
The Samurai is defending his love interest as well as his honour. Set on the Sumida River during Cherry Blossom time, it symbolises spring, renewal and romance.
Framed and mounted to museum conservation standard. Print tipped to acid free foam core backing and mat by rice paper hinges upper corners and wheatflour starch adhesive. True Vue 99% Anti UV Glass.
