Known in Japanese Lore for her smile and chubby cheeks featuring red lips, dimples, and circles on her forehead depicting eyebrows. A curious crossbreed character she is a dumpy, homely and cheery faced bringer of happiness. Used as a good luck charm in many shrines across Japan Otafuku represents “Much Good Fortune”. She brings happiness and good fortune to the man she marries.
Otafuku first appeared between the 14th and 16th century. Despite her homely appearance, her sincerity and purity of spirit melted the heart of even the most dangerous villian who underwent a change of heart by gazing at her face.
