Traditional Kagura Drama, 神楽, かぐら (“God-Entertainment”) is an ancient traditional form of Shinto theatrical drama dance much predating both Noh & Kabuki. Once strictly a formal ceremonial art derived from kami’gakari 神懸, かみがかり, (“Oracular Divination”) and “Chinkon” 鎮魂, ちんこん, (“spirit pacification”), it has evolved over many centuries. Contemporary Kagura is now a traditional ritual related to the agricultural calendar & a vibrant Kabuki-esque Theatre. It is particularly popular in parts of Shimane prefecture and urban Hiroshima.
