Meiji era Japanese Bronze Incense Burner. A very solid and beautifully hand crafted incense burner from the Meiji era approximately 80 to 100 years old. Bronze inlaid with a real gold floral motif on the front. In very good condition.
Incense (Kodo 香道 the Way of Fragrance) is one of the three very important ceremonies in Japanese culture with the Tea (Chanoyu 茶の湯 the Way of Tea) & Ikebana (Kado 華道 the Way of Flowers) ceremonies being the other two. These are an intrinsic cultural part of the social structure in every Japanese home. The burning of incense is an important spiritual practice. It is also a source of relaxation and enjoyment for many Japanese. This burner is in excellent condition. There are no marks or dents.
