Toyohara Kunichika Rare Book Cover Woodblock Print “The Samurai and Fish” c1890 – Framed
A rare Kuchi-e Woodblock print by Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900). Titled Samurai & Fish the work was originally commissioned as a cover for a novel and was printed circa 1890. Approximate dimensions are Koban size 23cm x 17cm. A very rare print by Kunichika.
Around the end of the Meiji period, artists such as Kunichika and Yoshitoshi, Toshikata and others produced cover prints for popular novels as additional income. Kunichika was a student of the great Kunisada and became one of the most famous woodblock artists of the Meiji Era 1868-1912.
Mounted and framed to Museum conservation standard. True Vue 99% Anti UV Glass. Print tipped to acid free foam core backing and mat by rice paper hinges upper corners and wheatflour starch adhesive.
