Hiroshige Gion Shrine Kyoto Woodblock Print
A beautifully detailed 1940s woodblock print from the series Hiroshige Famous Views of Kyoto. This print is titled “The Gion Shrine in Snow’.
Women wearing traditional kimono are visiting the shrine. Snow is falling heavily through the softly shaded winter sky and a tall stone torii gate towers above the figures. The print is in excellent condition.
Hiroshige signature and seals are present on the print as well as the publisher’s seal Yuyodo which is on the margin.
Censor’s seal: Kiwame

Hiroshige is best known for his landscapes as well as his depictions of birds and flowers. He created many woodblock print series such as the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido along with the Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido. He was considered the last great master of the woodblock print tradition.
