Hiroshige Woodblock Evening Shower At Tadasu Riverbank

Evening Shower at Tadasu Riverbank (Tadasugawara no yudachi) by Hiroshige.  From Hiroshige’s early series “Famous Views of Kyoto”.  People hurrying to shelter from a sudden shower with their Janome Gasa’s (oilpaper umbrellas).  Originally published in 1835 this is a circa 1950 woodblock print published by Uchida under the supervision of Tokuriki using traditional mulberry bark paper with deep colour saturation and bleed through to the verso.  In very good condition.

Utagawa Hiroshige also known as  Andō Hiroshige  1797 to 1858.  Hiroshige was the last great master of the ukiyo-e tradition.

Hiroshige is famous for his landscapes as well as his depictions of birds and flowers.  He created series such as the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido and the Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido.
