This rare Kuchi-e Woodblock print by Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) “Samurai & Fish” was originally commissioned as a cover for a novel. Printed circa 1890. 23cm x 17cm – Koban. A very rare print by Kunichika.
Around the end of the Meiji period, artists such as Kunichika, Yoshitoshi, Toshikata & others produced cover prints for popular novels as additional income. Kunichika was a student of the great Kunisada & became one of the most famous woodblock artists of the Meiji Era 1868-1912. POA
